P0171 is an OBD-II diagnostic trouble code that indicates the engine control system has detected a condition where the air-fuel mixture is running too lean.
In simple terms, the engine computer is detecting too much air or not enough fuel compared with the mixture it is trying to maintain.
What Does P0171 Mean?
The code P0171 — System Too Lean (Bank 1) means the engine computer has had to make significant fuel corrections because the mixture on Bank 1 is lean.
A lean condition can be caused by an air leak, insufficient fuel delivery, incorrect airflow measurement, sensor problems or other engine-related faults.
Common Symptoms of P0171
- Check Engine Light comes on
- Rough or unstable idle
- Engine hesitation during acceleration
- Loss of engine power
- Poor fuel economy
- Engine may stall at idle

Common Causes of P0171
P0171 does not automatically mean that the oxygen sensor is bad. Several different problems can cause the engine to run lean.
1. Vacuum Leak
A cracked vacuum hose, intake gasket or other unmetered-air leak can allow additional air into the engine.
2. MAF Sensor Problem
A contaminated or inaccurate Mass Air Flow sensor can cause the engine computer to miscalculate incoming air.
3. Low Fuel Pressure
A weak fuel pump, restricted fuel filter or fuel-pressure problem can reduce the amount of fuel reaching the engine.
4. Fuel Injector Problem
A restricted, dirty or malfunctioning injector may not deliver the required amount of fuel.
5. Intake Leak
Leaks around the intake system can introduce air that has not been properly accounted for by the engine management system.
6. Sensor or Wiring Fault
Problems with air-fuel ratio sensors, oxygen sensors, wiring or electrical connections can also contribute to a lean-condition code.
How to Diagnose P0171
Proper diagnosis is more important than simply clearing the code or replacing the sensor mentioned in the diagnostic report.
Step 1 — Scan for All Trouble Codes
Connect a suitable OBD-II scanner and check for stored, pending and related trouble codes.
Additional codes can provide important clues about whether the problem is related to ignition, fuel delivery, airflow or another system.
Step 2 — Check Fuel Trims
Look at the Short-Term Fuel Trim (STFT) and Long-Term Fuel Trim (LTFT) data if your scan tool supports live data.
Fuel-trim information can help determine whether the engine computer is adding fuel to compensate for a lean condition.
Step 3 — Inspect for Vacuum and Intake Leaks
Carefully inspect vacuum hoses, intake pipes, PCV connections, intake manifold areas and other possible sources of unmetered air.
A smoke test can be especially useful when a vacuum or intake leak is difficult to locate visually.
Step 4 — Check the MAF Sensor and Air Intake
Inspect the Mass Air Flow sensor and air intake system. Make sure the intake duct is not cracked, disconnected or allowing unmetered air into the engine.
Step 5 — Check Fuel Delivery
If there is no obvious air leak, investigate the fuel system.
- Check fuel pressure where applicable.
- Check fuel pump operation.
- Inspect the fuel filter where applicable.
- Check injector operation.
- Look for fuel-delivery restrictions.
Step 6 — Check Sensors and Wiring
If the mechanical and fuel-delivery checks do not reveal the cause, inspect the relevant sensors, connectors, wiring and power or ground circuits.
⚠️ Important Diagnostic Tip
Do not replace an oxygen sensor or MAF sensor simply because P0171 is stored. The code describes a lean condition; it does not automatically prove which component caused it. Diagnose the system first.
Can You Drive With P0171?
The answer depends on the symptoms and the severity of the problem.
If the vehicle is running normally and the only symptom is the Check Engine Light, you may be able to drive it for a short period while arranging proper diagnosis.
However, if the engine is running very roughly, losing significant power, stalling, overheating or showing other serious symptoms, it is better to stop driving and have the vehicle inspected.
