P0420 — Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1) means the vehicle's engine computer has determined that the catalytic converter on Bank 1 is not reducing exhaust pollutants as effectively as expected.

The engine management system uses oxygen sensors before and after the catalytic converter to monitor how the catalyst is performing.

When the sensor signals indicate that the catalytic converter is not operating within the expected efficiency range, the computer can store P0420 and illuminate the Check Engine Light.

How to Diagnose P0420

The most important rule when diagnosing P0420 is simple: do not replace the catalytic converter just because the code is present.

Step 1 — Scan for All Trouble Codes

Connect an appropriate diagnostic scanner and check for stored and pending codes.

Pay particular attention to misfire, fuel-trim, oxygen-sensor and air-fuel related codes. These may need to be addressed before diagnosing P0420.

Step 2 — Check for Exhaust Leaks

Inspect the exhaust system around the exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, oxygen sensors, gaskets and joints.

Can a Bad Catalytic Converter Cause Other Problems?
