| A car engine alternator. |
An alternator is an electrical generator that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy in the form of alternating current.
Most vehicle users never understand the secret behind self-charging automobiles, well, you’ll get to know about alternators here. You should know battery can get faulty, but alternator should be asked when it gets low. It’s a charging system that boosts the engine battery power.

An alternator is a generator of electric power in a car and is a major component of the vehicle's charging system. The alternator is a maintenance-free unit. In some cars model, it can last for up to 10-15 years without any repairs.
Alternators are typically found near the front of the engine and are driven by the crankshaft that connected with a drive belt. They are mounted using brackets that bolt to a specific point on the engine. One side of the brackets is usually a fixed point, while the other is adjustable to make it easier when tightening the drive belt.
Functions of an alternator .
So, what exactly is the function of the car alternator? These are the two main functions of the car alternator
1. AS A MAIN ELECTRIC POWER SOURCE WHEN THE ENGINE IS RUNNING
The first function of an alternator on the vehicle is as a source of electric power. The alternator can only work after the engine is turned on. This means that the alternator will only function after getting power from the engine.
With a serpentine belt, the alternator pulley is connected to the crankshaft pulley. So that, when the engine is running and the crankshaft pulley is rotating, then the engine rotation also rotates the alternator pulley. As a result, the alternator can produce electricity for use in various electric devices inside the car.
Yes, the electric power produced by the alternator is used for various electrical components in vehicles like the interior and exterior lights, audio video, air conditioner, and even used by various vehicle computers such as an Engine Control Unit (ECU), Transmission Control Unit (TCU), SRS Airbag Control Unit, Anti Lock Braking System Control Unit, etc.
2. CHARGING THE BATTERY
The next car alternator function is to charge the car battery. Besides being used as an electricity source when the engine is running, the alternator also functions to recharge the car battery. The alternator usually produces a higher voltage than the car battery.

And because the alternator voltage is higher than the car battery, it's makes the electric currents flow from the alternator to the battery. Inside the car battery, the electric current will be converted into chemical compounds so it can be stored to be used again when needed.
The process of charging electricity on this car battery will continue as long as the engine works to rotate the alternator.
How to maintain your car alternator.
1...avoid driving into flooded areas.
2... always out on your alternator belt from time to time .
3... avoid driving a damage battery with your car.
4...visit a close by auto electrical workshop to check on your battery.
